Sagehen Mesa Season 4 - Cast of Characters

Since the original characters who have been driving the story of Sagehen Mesa are aging to elder and dying off, I feel it's high time to take a look at some of the family trees and get a feel for the "up-and-coming" generations who will be carrying the story forward.

Let's start with the Mahon family.

Little Magdalena Roland is a descendant of both the Mahon and Roland families. Tess and Cliff are her paternal grandparents; Timothy is her father; Reuben and Hilary are her maternal grandparents, and Kathy is her mother. Magdalena is a snob, artistic, and friendly. Timothy is currently working the family mine like his father used to, and his father before him. Kathy is currently living in her childhood home and raising Magdalena as a single mother since she and Timothy never got along very well and never married. Kathy is an equestrian like her father, so I'm hoping she'll eventually bring home some trophies, but for now she's working at the bistro. She has been dating Hunter Dill, but also has shown some interest in co-worker Nick Whiting. Magdalena's grandmother Tess is still married to Anton Dexter and enjoying sculpting.

Not shown in Magdelena's tree are Cliff's son Clancy, daughter Sondra, and sister Stephanie,  so I'll show Cliff's tree here.

Cliff's sister Stephanie is the doctor, who is credited for funding the upgrades to the local school, now known as the Mahon STEM Academy. Despite what this picture is showing, she and Cliff have a pretty good relationship despite his criminal ways. She married the town sheriff Christopher Lang who just recently identified Cliff in a crowd and threatened to arrest him for his part in the whole buzzberry incident and assault of Josie Williams.

Unfortunately for him, Cliff freely admitted his guilt but informed the overzealous lawman that it was many years go that those crimes were committed, and the statute of limitations forbids him from making an arrest for those particular crimes, so if he doesn't have proof of anything more recent, the lawman is out of luck.

I think Cliff also called him a nincompoop.

Oddly enough, Christopher Lang isn't the only cop that is grafted into Cliff's family tree. His son Clancy also married an officer of the law - Rae Gooch - former sheriff who was recently voted out of office by the townspeople for her failure to apprehend Cliff for the charges previously mentioned.

To be fair, she really didn't get much cooperation from the townspeople who often chose to turn a blind eye whenever they spotted Cliff in town. Cliff's criminal enterprises still continue. For instance, he orchestrated and pulled the Snowflake Day heist at the Art Barn. Only Paul Culpepper knows for a fact that Cliff pulled that heist, but daughter Sondra has recently stumbled on Cliff's criminal lair and is torn about what to do with the information.

The Whitings

I'll move on to the Whitings next, since Sondra is dating one to the sons.

The original family I placed in town consisted of Bryon and Leona Whiting and their two boys - Nick (who currently works at the Bistro) and Tony (who works at the Rodeo concessions stand and is dating Sondra Mahon.) After they moved to town, Bryon and Leona added daughter Lara to the family. Lara hates the outdoors, is unlucky, excitable, and artistic. She also has the misfortune of inheriting her father's nose, but the glasses help camouflage it.

The Roland Family

Both Reuben and Hilary have passed on, but they are survived by their two daughters and two grandchildren. You already know about Kathy and Magdalena, but there's also Jolene, former teen sleuth turned private investigator after earning a degree in technology; her husband Alden Lawson, a wealthy yet inept author of romance novels and fledgling musician, and toddler son Sammy. This branch of the Roland family lives in Sunset Valley, but I'm thinking Jolene will be enlisted in helping locate runaway teen Ronda Culpepper.

The Culpepper Family

Ben Culpepper was one of the old-timers of the town when the game began. His backstory included an estranged son Paul, who was raised by grandparents after Ben's wife died of food poisoning (bad jelly bean) when Paul was a baby. Ben was a long-haul trucker, so raising Paul wasn't an option. Eventually, Paul and his wife Holli and daughters Dara (pictured above) and Ronda (not pictured because she ran away to Roaring Heights) moved to town during Ben's "twilight years."

Paul stumbled into Cliff's crime ring, and although he doesn't like being a criminal, Cliff is giving him no option. Of course Dara autonomously decided to join the police force, so there is yet another criminal/outlaw family dynamic. No one is aware that Paul is a criminal at this point. He's had some minor scrapes with the law, but he has convinced his family he is on the straight-and-narrow and working fulltime at the junkyard as a "waste material recycling associate."

Holli nearly divorced Paul early on when he landed in jail for petty crime, but she's convinced he's changed his ways. She has her own problems to deal with as she struggles with mental instability. The missing daughter is Ronda, and she autonomously befriended a "homeless vagrant" named Carmen, . . .

. . . and before I was even aware of it, they became best friends. (I changed Carmen to a young adult  and he only has Platonic affection for the girl to make it a little less creepy) Ronda didn't have any friends her age in her relationship panel, so this prompted the crush on the older man/runaway teen storyline.

The Barclay Family

Samir Barclay and his wife Bobbi have two sons: Jerod and Larry.

Both Samir and Bobbi were created by Story Progression. Samir was placed in the Roland household by the game when Jolene moved out to go to college in Sunset Valley. Therefore I made him a long-time friend of the family. He's a retired PI, but he might come out of retirement and join up with Jolene in searching for Ronda Culpepper. Bobbi was previously a girlfriend of Cliff Mahon, but left him due to his mean-spirited and misogynistic ways. She then started dating Samir, and the rest is history. I don't know a whole lot about Jerod and Larry yet, except that Jerod, the teen, is artistic, disciplined, has star quality, hates the outdoors and wants to be rich and famous someday. Larry is unlucky and clumsy, but good.

The Williams/Baum family

Another old founding family in town is the Williams/Baum family. The matriarch is Josie. Her husband Ben has passed away some time before the save file starts. They had a daughter Lucile, who married Dr. Winston Baum, and they live in the biggest, fanciest house in town. Dr. Baum was discovered to have illegally provided buzzberry, a performance enhancing substance, to a professional athlete, violating both the law and the medical code of ethics. He quietly divorced his wife and skipped town in shame.

Winston and Lucile's daughter Hannah became a successful firefighter and married Hector Lopez who a is little younger than she is. They produced a son, Leroy who is now a teen, brave, good, eco-friendly (like his great grandmother Josie), and grumpy. Josie has recently passed away or will pass away soon, depending on what save file I go with.

The Lopez Family

Hector, along with his wife Hannah and parents Augustin and Maria, are original to the save file. However, Augustin and Maria had two other children as the game progressed: Darryl and Rosalie.

Darryl is a young adult working at the bookstore and wants to become a blog artist. Rosalie is a teen who is a slob, workaholic, disciplined and artistic. Her lifetime wish is to master the arts. She shares the artistic trait and same lifetime wish as Lara Whiting, the teen girl who lives across the street, so I can see them becoming good friends.

Keith Thurston and Hunter Dill

Keith Thurston is the biological child of Brock and Lori Thurston, who are imprisoned for their parts in the buzzberry scandal and for child neglect, as they were known to leave poor Keith alone as an infant - usually on the floor or in the snow, while they went galavanting around town.

(Babysitter pulling poor Keith out of the snow pictured above.)

He was adopted by Guadalupe Coy but kept his original surname. Guadalupe was good to him, but his early childhood trauma has left him with a rather nervous personality. He's a coward and light sleeper, who finds security staying at home watching TV and practicing chess. His adoptive mother Guadalupe has recently passed away, and teenage Keith is left in the care of Guadalupe's roommate Hunter Dill. I don't know how well they know each other or how well they get along, so I may try and find him a different living situation.

Hunter Dill is currently dating Kathy Roland. I don't know much about him except that he drives around in a limo, and Kathy's ex, Timothy Mahon, hired Kathy's sister Jolene to investigate Hunter who apparently hacked Timothy's computer.

I don't know if Tim's jealous of Hunter for dating Kathy or if Hunter is really up to no good. Time will tell.

The Gwynne Family

Preacher Jasper Gwynne and his wife Meagan have two daughters: Starr and Margaret

Starr, like Keith Thurston, is a couch potato, so maybe she and Keith can eventually become a couple. They live close to each other. They know each other from school, but it's clear I need to concentrate on the teens and get them to know and hang out with each other more as none of them seem very close to anyone their own ages. Starr, like the other teen girls in town, is artistic so there's something they all have in common. Maybe the Art Barn needs to start an art club for teens.

Margaret is on the verge of becoming a teen and will age up any time now. She's clumsy, good, and a mooch.

The Vest Family

Fidel and Sheryl Vest were provided by Story Progression. Since they showed up in town, they have produced a son - Rusty. Rusty is rebellious, a loser, a heavy sleeper, and athletic. He tends to autonomously visit Josie Williams at all hours of the day or night. I can only guess he bonds with her over basketball, as Josie is (or was) a phenomenal basketball player. Like the other teens, he doesn't seem close to anyone his age, but was trying to impress Ronda prior to her running off to Roaring Heights, but Ronda wasn't very impressed with him - probably due to her crush on Carmen.

That's at least most of the residents of Sagehen Mesa. Now it's on to Season 4!
