Goldbeard PI - Part 3 - The questionable produce episode

Coral has been feeling out of sorts lately. Maybe her job is getting to her.

In her latest case, it was discovered that the grocery store, the diner, and the bistro were selling genetically altered fruit to consumers and charging exorbitant prices. This "new, improved" fruit gave the consumers an extra boost of energy and sense of well-being, but this effect was quickly replaced by an upset stomach.

Coral purchased some tomatoes and then went to the hospital to sample them - just in case they had really adverse side effects. It turns out the effects weren't dire, but rather unpleasant, causing poor Coral to toss her lunch. She went to the media to blow the whistle on this scam.

This solved one case, but her next case is looking deeper into this mutant fruit travesty. Who is behind getting this fruit on the market without appropriate testing? Coral is so frustrated, she knew she needed to take a break and take care of her mental health.

After a good long steam, Coral decided to cut loose and throw a party. Rather than have her guests trash her house, she decided to hold the party at one of the parks. (This park had literally nothing to do but sit on a bench or look through a telescope. I don't even think the water was fishable or swimmable. So I added in a gnubb game, dominos table, buffet table, and portable stereo.)

Our friend the man with the big hat made an appearance, sporting a bright yellow pair of swim trunks. I learned that his name is Ricardo Gregario.  He was a hit with the ladies, especially Laurita Pepper.

Perhaps Laurita should have showered before coming to the party. Come to think of it, there were several people stinking the place up. To be fair, it was a rather hot day.

Coral met a young man she became interested in. His name is Nestor. She doesn't know much about Nestor yet, but he said he was single and he is a mooch.

After the party ended and everyone went home, Coral decided to check out the island using the telescope, which is located at the top of a tall tower. It had a lovely view.

A few days later, Coral decided to ask Nestor out. They met at the beach, then went to the Hot Spot for some dancing and dinner.

After kissing her, he mooched some food from her. She went an ordered a group serving of something at the bar (boy was it expensive!)

I think this older couple was having a spat because the woman insisted on sitting at Coral and Nestor's table instead of with her husband. Nestor must have been really hungry because he went back for seconds. I'm thinking Coral was a little put out because she was hoping to have the leftovers for lunch the next day.

If looks could kill, he's be a dead man.

I looks like word about the mutant produce is getting around town. The lady in the pink vest suggests growing your own food - just to be safe.

"You make such a cute couple," said the buttinsky at the next table, "Are you married?"

It's only their second date, dude. Mind your own business!

On a trip to the shopping mall, Coral expressed an interest in a video camera, so I let her buy it. She filmed a couple of the cashiers, then went home to watch the footage. Maybe she's considering using this camera for surveillance.

Nestor called her. He seems to be getting serious, but Coral made it clear that she had no interest in having children.

"I'd much rather raise a dragon that a human baby," she told him.

By the way, Coral has recently aged up to an adult. I will need to give Fawn a birthday in a couple days to get them on track with their original age gap.

Speaking of Fawn. She quickly changed her mind about the political career and chose instead to join the music career. I got her a guitar so she can learn to play it. She's also doing well in painting, having reached level 10 awhile back. She has a very distinctive style, and I can't figure out what traits compel her to paint like this. Fawn is neurotic, a snob, a mooch, a party animal, and has a good sense of humor.

In addition to disliking children and being grumpy, Coral can't stand art, so Fawn keeps her paintings in her own room or sells them. (Coral's other traits are daredevil and light sleeper.)

Fawn has met a few men. She was asked out by this old man whose name I don't recall. There must be some kind of setting in Nraas mods that turns off the elderly NPCs from calling and asking young sims out. But I haven't found it yet.

I went to check on her once and she and Martin Pepper were flirting, so that's a potential mate for her.

I think he's a co-worker, judging from his outfit.

As for the mutant fruits mystery, it turns out Mary Sue Pleasant was in cahoots with the bistro's chef, adding questionable chemicals to the fertilizer used to grow the produce. (The game said it was the bistro's chef, but the I swear the person Mary Sue met with is Clementine Parrott, so this crime ring may be larger than we think.)

Why Mary Sue wants to poison the town is beyond me. I may have to ask what she does for a living. Is she a scientist wanting to circumvent the appropriate consumer protection laws in order to beat a rival company to the discovery of produce enhancing technology? Is she a politician wanting to take credit for improving the constituents' lives in order to get re-elected? Who knows?

All Coral knows is an envelope changed hands and the whole thing was underhanded, so she blew the whistle on those involved.

Also, I dropped some characters from the Sandi French game into this world. Sandi French's son's imaginary friend Lucky, his wife Holli Darwin Butler, and the clone of Sandi's husband, Bernie Butler Jr. have arrived. Lucky is also an investigator. I haven't decided if he will work with Coral or against her. They haven't met yet. How they react to each other autonomously might be the deciding factor.

Anyway, I bring this up because I found little Bernie Jr. sitting alone in a public park and was wondering if he had been abandoned.

The park seemed deserted. Then I checked the tower and found Lucky. Okay then.

Coral looks unsure of her coffee. Maybe she thinks the beans were treated with that hinky chemical fertilizer, and she's hoping she won't get sick. This past case has made her paranoid, but that doesn't mean someone isn't out to get her.

To be continued . . .
